Work at a Homeless Shelter

Volunteers would be needed to spend one-on-one time with the children, giving them a sense of security and confidence, letting them know that people care about them, that they are not alone any longer. These tasks would include things like teaching them simple English, showing them craft techniques that they could use to make money, exploring with them opportunities in the community that would help them to get control of their lives—simply mentoring these young children who have had to fend for themselves due to circumstances beyond their control.

It has been estimated that there are over 20,000 homeless children in Kathmandu alone. They are malnourished, poorly dressed, and uneducated—galvanized against the hazards and prey that surround their lives. They are also children, and given a sense of security they quickly revert to being young and joyful, their eyes filled with love and gratitude. Volunteers will have a deeply moving and rewarding experience that will stay with them in one form or another for the rest of their lives.
